New search engine 'revolutionary'
New search engine 'revolutionary'
08 September 2005
A 26-year-old PhD student from the University of New South Wales has patented a new way of exploring the web that could revolutionise existing search engines.
Developed by Ori Allon, the Orion© search engine is designed to complement searches conducted on services such as Google, Yahoo or MSN Search.
Search engines find pages on which keywords occur. Sometimes these pages are important to the topic. Other times they are not.
Orion© finds pages where the content is about a topic strongly related to the key word. It then returns a section of the page, and lists other topics related to the key word so the user can pick the most relevant.
"The results to the query are displayed immediately in the form of expanded text extracts, giving you the relevant information without having to go to the website - although you still have that option if you wish," said Israeli-born Allon, who completed a Bachelor and Masters degree at Monash University in Melbourne before moving to UNSW for his PhD.
"By displaying results to other associated key words directly related to your search topic, you gain additional pertinent information that you might not have originally conceived, thus offering an expert search without having an expert's knowledge.
"Take a search such as the American Revolution as an example of how the system works. Orion© would bring up results with extracts containing this phrase. But it would also give results for American History, George Washington, American Revolutionary War, Declaration of Independence, Boston Tea Party and more. You obtain much more valuable information from every search."
The idea of finding information without having to click through to websites came from Allon's supervisor, Eric Martin, back in March this year. "I provided the spark. But it is Ori who has developed this through his amazing creativity and sheer hard work over these past months," said Mr Martin.
Andrew Stead of New South Innovations, the technology transfer company within UNSW, says he is confident that Orion© will fill a gap in the market noted by Microsoft founder Bill Gates.
"Bill Gates was recently quoted in Forbes magazine as saying that we need to take the search way beyond how people think of it today. We believe that Orion© will do that."
Allon said some big companies already had shown some initial interest in implementing Orion © for commercial use.

SCRIPT: Shane Vaughn is with Hewlett-Packard. Shane, how do the advances in printing technology promote DIY marketing?
CUT: (Vaughn) One is the technology - just the resolution has significantly improved, the speeds have significantly improved. And then secondly is the cost of those printers has just absolutely plummeted. HP just released our first color laser jet printer less than four hundred dollars, and you couldn't get a product like that for less than several thousand dollars just a couple of years ago.

Online advertisers turning to pay-per-call
USATODAY.com - Online advertisers turning to pay-per-call
Online advertisers turning to pay-per-call
By David Koenig, The Associated Press
DALLAS — Personal-injury lawyer Frank Frasier wants the world to know about his business but didn't think much of the search-based Internet advertising that's all the rage these days. Potential clients wouldn't learn much about him through it, he figured, and he really can't tell if they have a case without speaking with them directly.
But Frasier's opinion of Internet search advertising changed recently with the recent arrival of pay-per-call. This technique prompts Web surfers looking for lawyers in his hometown of Tulsa, to pick up the phone instead of clicking an ad or sending e-mail.
"We've gotten about a dozen calls and half turned into cases," Frasier said. "I'm a believer. It fits my needs."
Pay-per-call could be especially powerful for local businesses that have ignored the Internet, including those that don't even have a Web site, its advocates say.
Most search advertising now takes a pay-per-click approach.
Search engines such as Google Inc. auction the right to have a company's ad display alongside regular search results when a computer user types certain keywords, such as "Tulsa lawyers." Advertisers pay each time someone clicks on the ad link.
In pay-per-call, keywords also are auctioned. But instead of a link to click, the ad directs the user to the telephone. In one version, the user calls a special number that is forwarded to the advertiser's regular phone. In another, users type in their phone numbers and get a return call from the merchant. Either way, the advertiser is billed for the referral.
