Click Fraud Just Another McGuffin

Click Fraud Just Another McGuffin Click Fraud Just Another McGuffin By Cody Willard RealMoney.com Contributor 1/26/2006 9:26 AM EST Click here for more stories by Cody Willard This column was originally published on RealMoney on Jan. 24. It's being republished as a bonus for TheStreet.com readers. So let's talk about this Google (GOOG:Nasdaq - commentary - research - Cramer's Take) click fraud thing for one second, as it has become a large part of the bear case on Google right now. Look, Google knows there are some teens in Siberia, and yes, probably Duluth too, who are messing with click-through rates by repeatedly hitting ads. 1. 10 Hot Techs That Aren't Apple or Google 2. Google Catches Cold 3. Sirius Hires Allen & Co. Exec 4. New Tech Deserves Some Respect 5. Slower Growth's Upside But the big question isn't whether or not this nefarious stuff is going on. It's whether or not this evil stuff (to borrow the Googlite phrase "do no evil") is going on to an extent that Google's customers will be surprised to find out about. It's related to how advertisers in television and magazines (and all other media) have to account for TVs that are left on for the dogs while nobody's home, or for subscribers who never open the magazine. And guess what -- both the sellers and the buyers of such advertisements are aware of and account for this ahead of time. You see, Google tells its customers beforehand that there will be click fraud, and it even accounts for that in its pitch. That's right, when Google tells a customer that they can expect X return on investment (ROI) when using Google's ad network, Google's already included click fraud in those numbers. So in essence, the only way for this supposed click-fraud issue to really become problematic is if it's worse than Google realizes. Consider it the online marketplace version of Wall Street's "worse than expected" scenario. Funny Quotes Quotes Gatlinburg Cabins Quotes Directory Famous Quotes

Redmond | News: Microsoft's Search Engine Marketing Push

Redmond | News: Microsoft's Search Engine Marketing Push Microsoft's Search Engine Marketing Push January 13, 2006 • by Michael Desmond Asked why he wanted to scale Mount Everest, famed British mountain climber George Leigh Mallory famously replied: "Because it's there." It may seem like Microsoft has scaled every peak, but the software giant is playing an important game of catch-up with Yahoo! and rival Google in the area of search engine advertising. If Microsoft hopes to achieve its vision of services-based applications like Office Live and Windows Live, it needs a way capture ad dollars and produce viable revenue streams. That's why Microsoft has spent more than a year honing its adCenter search engine marketing effort. As a direct competitor to Google AdWords and Yahoo! Overture, adCenter promises to bring pay-per-click (PPC) advertising to the next level. The program, currently in beta, is expected to formally launch in June. Microsoft and Yahoo agree to enhance their search engines

http://arstechnica.com/journals/microsoft.ars/2006/1/12/2480 Microsoft and Yahoo agree to enhance their search engines eWeek is reporting that Microsoft may have some interest in Yahoo after all, but it has nothing to do with buyouts. Rather, researchers at Microsoft have been chatting with Yahoo about how to improve online searching capabilities. Essentially, Microsoft and Yahoo have put their heads together and concluded that they must make their search engines, at the very least, comparable to Google. Wow. Good thing they spoke with one another! Microsoft Research Asia director Harry Shum had the following to say about the special conversation: "There is something called search relevance that Google has been ahead of most competitors in, but the gap is closing. And Yahoo claims statistically that this difference does not even exist anymore between Google and Yahoo. MSN, with a lot of help from MSR [Microsoft Research] is closing the gap like crazy. We will be catching up with them in a matter of months. And something will be there. But that is only one problem—one very tough problem, however." Microsoft, Yahoo Talk Search Microsoft, Yahoo Talk Search By Darryl K. Taft January 12, 2006 Despite Microsoft Corp.'s denial of rumors that the software giant may have interest in Yahoo Inc., the companies have been talking—at least on a research level. Harry Shum, the Beijing-based managing director of Microsoft Research Asia, said he has recently spoken with the head of Yahoo Research about the issue of enhancing search capabilities and competing with Google. At the start of the year, there were rumors that Microsoft had made a bid to buy Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Yahoo. The Los Angeles Times, citing anonymous sources, said Microsoft allegedly had offered $80 billion for the company, an amount Yahoo rebuffed as too low. A week later, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer flat-out denied in a published interview that Microsoft had made an offer to buy Yahoo Online Free Recipes Famous Quotes Gatlinburg Cabins Christmas Recipes Healthy Chicken Recipes Cute Quotes Sales Books Chicken Recipes Wes Zimmerman Fireplace Mantles recipes Fast Cash Payday Loan Center Recipes Famous Quotes Debt Consolidation Mortgage Chicken Recipes Love Quotes sell home Auto Insurance Funny Jokes - Bio-Optic Organized Knowledge device, trade named: BOOK Chicken Recipes Quotes Diabetic Recipes Funny Jokes

Freeze on tray. Melt wax and chocolate chips in pot. Dip balls into chocolate and lay on waxed paper to cool. Quotes Love Quotes Love Quotes Love Quotes Life Quotes Life Quotes From Nita Holleman via Rae in Minnesota Rib Roast with au Jus Sauce a La Nita 1 "2 or 3 rib" prime-rib beef roast (4 1/2 - 6 pounds) 5 or 6 cloves fresh garlic, crushed, peeled Fresh or dried Rosemary, basil, thyme Salt Black pepper 2 Tablespoons Kitchen Bouquet Browning Sauce Oil, butter or bacon drippings 2 carrots, scraped and cut in chunks 2 potatoes, peeled and cut in chunks 1 Vidalia or sweet type onion, peeled, cut in half 2 cups table quality Red wine OR, 1/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar, plus 1/4 cup Red Wine Vinegar, plus 1 1/2 cups table quality Red wine or, 1 Knorr beef bouillon cube dissolved in 1 1/2 cups hot water 2 Tablespoons Dark Brown sugar 1/4 to 1/2 cup beef drippings 2 additional Tablespoons Kitchen Bouquet Browning Sauce 2 tablespoons chopped parsley Buy a prime, or top choice roast (preferably ribs 12 through 10.) Have the chine/backbone trimmed off. [Your dog might appreciate these.] Rib bones look best if shortened and "frenched" if it is possible to get a butcher to do this. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. In a small bowl combine herbs, rosemary, thyme, salt, pepper, Kitchen Bouquet and oil to form a glaze or paste. Smear mixture over roast. Poke garlic cloves in various places in or under fat of roast. Place roast, fat side up in center of oven on a rack in a large roasting pan and roast for about 20 minutes at the high heat. Reduce oven temperature to 325 degrees F. Lay a piece of heavy duty foil loosely over the roast to prevent overbrowning. Place vegetables in pan around roast and drizzle them with drippings, butter or oil. Cook beef for approximately 12 minutes per pound for medium-rare. Check the temperature of the roast deep in the center of the roast or in several places with a meat thermometer. It should register 120 to 125 degrees F. for medium rare. Remove roast and allow to "rest" for 20 minutes to prevent loosing juices when it is carved. Note: The temperature inside the roast will continue rising about 10 degrees. Remove vegetables and set them aside. Pour pan drippings and juices off and separate the fat and juices with a fat separator if you have one so you can use the broth for the "au jus" and save the fat for Yorkshire pudding or another use. Place the roasting pan over medium-high heat. Add the wine or other liquids and scrape up the brown bits from the bottom of the pan. Add sugar, beef drippings, Kitchen Bouquet, reserved vegetables and parsley. Season with salt and black pepper. Cook until wine is reduced about 50%, or about 5 minutes. Strain sauce through cheesecloth or a strainer to remove solids before serving. This sauce is the "au jus" you want to serve HOT with the sliced beef either on it or as a "dipping sauce." Nita's Note: 1 or 2 Tablespoons Arrowroot dissolved in 1 or 2 Tablespoons cold water added to the sauce will thicken somewhat and enrich the sauce. Do NOT boil sauce after adding the Arrowroot.
