Yahoo Buys Maker of 'Widget' Applications

Yahoo Buys Maker of 'Widget' Applications Yahoo Buys Maker of 'Widget' Applications Monday July 25, 12:08 am ET By Michael Liedtke, AP Business Writer Popular Web Site Yahoo Inc. Buys Maker of 'Widget' Applications SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Hoping to pave a new path to its popular Web site, Yahoo Inc. has acquired Konfabulator, a tiny software maker that provides a computer platform for monitoring the weather, stock prices and a wealth of other customized information without opening a Web browser. ADVERTISEMENT The deal, finalized late last week for an undisclosed price, gives Yahoo access to a toolbox of mini-applications -- known as widgets -- that have built a cult following since Palo Alto-based Konfabulator first introduced them for Apple Computer Inc.'s Macintosh in 2002. Apple liked the concept so much that it includes a widgets dashboard in the Mac's operating system. With just three employees, Konfabulator designs its widget software to run on the ubiquitous Windows operating system as well. The widgets are designed to make it easy for outsiders to develop and share new applications -- a concept that Yahoo wants to encourage as it experiments with new ways to make the wealth of information on its Web site more useful, said Toni Schneider, vice president of the company's developer network.

Double-Digit Growth in Search Seen by AOL and Ask Jeeves From Q1 to Q2 2005, While Top Search Players Google and Yahoo! Maintain Consistent Growth, According to Nielsen//NetRatings Newly Released June 2005 Search Share Data Reports Google at 47 Percent, Yahoo! at 22 Percent and MSN at 12 Percent; My Way Search Makes Its Way Into Top Five Rankings for the First Time NEW YORK, July 21 Nielsen//NetRatings, a global leader in Internet media and market research, reported today Q1 and Q2 search growth for the top five search engines. AOL and Ask Jeeves rose 15 and 16 percent, respectively, in the number of searches conducted, while Google and Yahoo! maintained single digit growth (see Table 1). Overall, search as a category saw a five percent increase in the number of searches conducted from Q1 to Q2 during 2005. "While growth in searches was modest among the 'Big Three' search engines, the fourth and fifth biggest search engines, AOL and Ask Jeeves, grew three times as fast," said Ken Cassar, director of strategic analysis, Nielsen//NetRatings. "While it's far too early to say that Google needs to watch its back, a resurgent AOL makes the game a lot more interesting." Table 1. Search Growth for Top 5 Search Engines, Q1-Q2 2005 Search Engine Q1 2005 Q2 2005 Percent Change Searches (000) Searches (000) --------------------------------------------------------------------- Google 5,737,097 6,088,343 6% --------------------------------------------------------------------- Yahoo! 2,576,473 2,798,123 9% --------------------------------------------------------------------- MSN 1,659,235 1,590,049 -4% --------------------------------------------------------------------- AOL 562,816 646,641 15% --------------------------------------------------------------------- Ask Jeeves 216,656 250,869 16% --------------------------------------------------------------------- Overall Total 12,263,765 12,849,121 5% --------------------------------------------------------------------- Source: Nielsen//NetRatings MegaView Search, July 2005 June 2005 Search Share Data Released The newly released June 2005 MegaView Search report ranks Google No. 1 with 47 percent of all searches conducted online, Yahoo! at 22 percent and MSN at 12 percent (see Table 2). AOL Search held five percent of all searches, and for the first time, My Way Search made its way into the top five rankings, garnering two percent of all searches. "My Way's unique anti-advertising value proposition resonates with a small, but growing market niche," said Cassar. "As online publishers enjoy the growing demand for advertising inventory and continue to create more ad slots within a finite number of Web pages, this disaffected minority may become a force that the major players need to contend with." Table 2. MSN saw the largest increase in its image searches with a 90 percent spike (see Table 3). AOL's image search soared 74 percent, Yahoo!'s rose 55 percent, and Google's jumped 12 percent. Ask Jeeves' growth was fueled mainly by its news searches, which increased 42 percent. Table 3. "Yahoo!'s (nasdaq: YHOO - news - people ) results were largely in-line with expectations, with revenues at the mid-point of guidance. However, given expectations in the stock, even 41% organic growth apparently disappointed the market," said the research firm. According to Banc of America, the revenue-per-search metric was higher in the second quarter than the first. "While pricing trends in the second quarter were generally unchanged from prior quarters, revenue-per-search rose in the mid to high single digits." ADVERTISEMENT The Web search leader filed a complaint with the NAF on May 11, claiming legal rights to Web addresses bearing a close resemblance to google.com, which it registered in late 1999. Sergey Gridasov, of St. Petersburg, Russia, registered googkle.com, ghoogle.com, gfoogle.com and gooigle.com between December 2000 and January 2001 through Computer Services Langenbach GmbH, which did business as Joker.com. He did not respond to charges levied against him. Because Gridasov failed to answer, the arbitrator was entitled to accept all reasonable allegations and inferences in the complaint from Google as true, unless the evidence was clearly contradictory. The NAF arbitrator, Paul Dorf, found that Gridasov did not have legitimate rights to the Web addresses, and the Web addresses were confusingly similar to Google's (NasdaqNM:GOOG - News) trademark rights to its own name. Further, the arbitrator found that Gridasov was using them in bad faith by presumably profiting from the use of domains.

Google Gains U.S. Market Share At MSN's Expense - Forbes.com

Google Gains U.S. Market Share At MSN's Expense - Forbes.com Google Gains U.S. Market Share At MSN's Expense 07.07.05, 10:31 AM ET Tear Sheet | Chart | News Bear Stearns said that according to comScore Networks U.S. search data for May showed that Google (nasdaq: GOOG - news - people ) gained market share at the expense of Microsoft (nasdaq: MSFT - news - people ) unit MSN. The data show Google's share of U.S. searches rose to 37.5% in May from 36.5% in April. Bear Stearns said, "In our view, Google's share gain in the domestic market is a positive given the intensifying competitive landscape as new competitors emerge and existing competitors are expanding their search offerings. However, we caution investors not to rely heavily on two months of volume data to form an investment opinion for the quarter as other factors such as monetization (pricing) should be considered."

Make Search Engines Work for You

Make Search Engines Work for You Surfing the net continues to simplify. But, if you use search engines, there are some things you should know. Justin Osmer, a project manager for MSN, offers computer users a few key tips. ANCHOR LEAD: Looking online for an air conditioner but keep coming up with oxygen and hair products? Jon McNally has more. (:60) SCRIPT: Lifestyles, I’m Jon McNally. Surfing the net continues to simplify. But, if you use search engines, there are a few tips you should know. Justin Osmer is a project manager for MSN. Justin, do you have any tricks of the trade? CUT: (Osmer) If you put quotation marks around what you’re looking for, that’ll help you find it much more easily and will give you back a result that exactly matches that term. So for example, given the hot summer days these days, if you’re going for an air conditioner, you put quotation marks around air conditioner, you’ll get results back that say that exact phrase, rather than a bunch of results that may just be about air and a bunch that may be about conditioner. SCRIPT: Are there any innovations at MSN’s search engine? CUT: (Osmer) Well, something new that just launched this last week is the opportunity for a local search, and at MSN.com at the top of the search box there you’ll see a link to local search, and what local search does is provide you with local information that has addresses and phone numbers coupled with a map. SCRIPT: That’s Lifestyles from MSN. I’m Jon McNally. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Produced for MSN Arizona Search Engine Optimization
